assessment for learning

The Vale of Glamorgan School Improvement Service commissioned Chalk to produce a video resource to introduce teachers to the benefits of assessment for learning.

The finished DVD video comprises 10 video sequences, totalling over an hour of material.

“ The film crew were very skilled in capturing exactly the kinds of talk that were really valuable at the editing stage, and were very familiar with working in the classroom environment. This was hugely beneficial.

“ In addition, Wayne proved to be a highly effective interviewer, making the interviewees relax, and coaxing answers even out of more reluctant pupils and teachers.

“ His obviously genuine interest in the whole process of teaching and learning, including an informed curiosity about the principles and practice of assessment for learning techniques, led to probing follow-up questions, and resulted in very interesting answers.”

a week at the willows

Chalk's team spent a week at the Willows special needs nursery school, and produced a 40 minute documentary for them.

“The production team gave generous time to listen and learn about our work. They helped us to focus on the exact messages that the film was to send, and they talked to everyone involved leaving us feeling completely assured that we were in safe hands.

“ It all worked brilliantly resulting in a really powerful film with which we are delighted.”

let's think!

Whilst the importance of 'thinking' to child development is universally recognised, it is rarely the focus of classroom teaching. Let's Think! is a programme that supports the development of thinking in young children.

Chalk has produced a video which supports the Let's Think! training, in South Wales. The video is used to introduce teachers, head teachers and other education professionals to the programme.

introducing catch up

Catch Up is a charity that aims to help children who find reading and writing difficult. This film tells the story of their success.

We talked with the teachers, teaching assistants and head teachers who are involved in the delivery of the Catch Up Programme, as well as to a few of the children who have benefited.

parents can make a difference

Catch Up wanted a fifteen-minute film for parents, highlighting the importance of encouraging reading outside school.

Wayne directed a documentary style video that explored a range of simple reading activities through the eyes of three families.

This 'case study' approach, real children in real environments, produced a powerful and engaging film which is now being used by primary schools across the UK to encourage parents to read with their children.

moorings way

As a 'Beacon' school, Moorings Way Infant School in Portsmouth was looking to find a way to share some of its key teaching and learning practices and ideas with neighbouring schools.

Wayne got to know the school and its staff in depth and produced an engaging documentary. The video has been extremely well received by Moorings' neighbouring schools, and has also helped the Moorings Way teaching team to learn something about their own teaching practice.
