tuning into university - DVD videoEncouraging young students to think about HE is something many schools find difficult. Many resources are seen as top down and not in tune with the language and mood of today’s teenagers. Queen Mary’s College in Basingstoke in partnership with Aimhigher wanted to develop a DVD video that directly addressed the views and concerns held by Year 9 students about going to university.
Chalk developed Tuning into university, a DVD video that features Basingstoke school pupils talking directly to ex-pupils of Basingstoke schools who are now studying at university or at work after gaining their degree. Year 9 students ask the questions that concern them: about leaving home, studying, costs and debt, opportunities and social life. Fast paced and using only the words of students the DVD (which also has subtitles available) presents an honest and often frank appraisal of life at university. Chalk also developed a Teacher Resource DVD video in conjunction with the main film – a resource that allows careers advisors and teachers to extend their students thinking about university. It comprises 18 short video sequences taken from the main film and other, previously unseen, material. Tuning into university was launched in Basingstoke in March 2007 and individual copies will be available for every Year 9 student until 2009.
